Description
An opulent antique French tea flatware service. It is a lovely set, with a gilded (gold vermeil) silver basket-style tea strainer, a gilded shell-shaped scoop (tea caddy spoon), a gilded sugar tong with claw ends, and 12 parcel-gilt tea spoons with crosshatch pattern handles.
The pieces are made of FRENCH hallmarked silver, all at least .800 silver and some possibly .950 silver. All the pieces are hallmarked with the Minerva French silver touch mark, I just can't make them all out clearly.  France silver standards were .800 & .950 instead of the .925 sterling standard, so even sterling imported into France would receive a hallmark corresponding to .800 silver.
There are multiple makers represented in the set, including Capelet & Guthe, a "L & J" makers mark, and a "Gallot" makers mark. The set can be dated circa 1885-1895 as that is the span of the Capelet & Guthe mark.  Mixing of makers and even some pattern differences in these sets was extremely commonplace at the time.
No damage or repairs to any of the pieces. No dents. There is light to moderate wear to the gold vermeil, consistent with age and use.
The set comes in the original satin lined wooden box. The lid of the box is inlaid with an engraved plaque and other strips of metal. One thin strip is missing and they are lifted somewhat in one corner.  I can't tell whether the metal is brass with an old patina on it, or vermeil silver with tarnish.  To me it looks more like silver with gold vermeil.
