very handsome antique French silver clad carving set is beautifully designed in the
    Rococo
    style with “
    Art Nouveau
” influences. The decorative scheme illustrates the theme of duck hunting. The handles feature cattails, shells, acanthus motifs and flowers and the fork has a distinctive safety guard in the shape of a hunting dog with a duck in its mouth. The handles are silver clad, the blade of the knife is steel and the upper part of the fork is silver plated. The handles bear the French “
    Head of Mercury
” hallmark inside an oval, the guarantee that the sterling is at least 80% silver and which has been used in Paris since 1838 for items destined for export. They also bear the maker’s mark consisting of the initials “A” and “D” surrounding the image of a woodcock, the mark of
    Alphonse
    Debain
, master silversmith located in the rue du Temple in the Marais district of Paris between 1883 and 1911. He was a Gold Medal winner at the
    Exposition

    Alphonse
    Debain
    along with the word “
    Paris
”. The upper part of the fork bears the number “6” or “9”. The accompanying case is not the original one. Both pieces are in very good condition with the exception of faint scratches and very tiny dents on the handles, the tip of the knife handle has been flattened. Please refer to the detailed photos on this page. This ensemble will be a prestigious addition to your table or your collection.
