Description
You are buying a vintage Kensington "System Saver" external cooling fan & power center for Macintosh compact computers.Apple's first Macintosh computers were notable because they did not have cooling fans. This made them very quiet. But some users worried that their very expensive Macs would overheat without a fan. So Kensington, a third-party company that designed and sold many Mac accessories, invented the "System Saver," an external cooling fan designed to fit exactly on the top of compact Macs. The System Saver clips onto the top of an original Macintosh 128K, a 512K "Fat Mac," or a Macintosh Plus and provides a gentle increase in air circulation using its fan. The System Saver also incorporates a power center that moves the power switch for the Mac to the front of the computer (
very
handy) and adds outlets for external hard drives or other peripherals.
Photos 2 and 3 show how a System Saver fits onto a compact Mac (not included). The other photos show the System Saver by itself. These are all single-button System Savers that turn the Mac and both outlets ON and OFF with a single switch. They have all been tested and shown to work properly: The fan moves air and the switch works properly to turn on the fan and the outlets.
System Saver fans are relatively quiet, and certainly much quieter than those used in IBM PC's.
Experts disagree about whether Apple's early Macs really need a cooling boost, but if you have a rare 128K or 512K Mac it can't hurt. And you will like the convenience of controlling power from the front of your Mac. Note that this System Saver is
not
for Mac SE's, SE/30's or Color Classics -- these Macs have built-in cooling fans.
